The Haleyville Lions went on the road to Winfield, taking on the Pirates in a non-area game this Friday and left with a big win. This brings the Lions record to 4-1 on the season.
Winfield took first possession but was unable to continue the drive, punting to Haleyville. The Lions made the best of this opportunity and drove the ball down, completing the drive with a touchdown pass from Tanner Ivey to Dillon Posey. The Lions led with 4:50 left in the first quarter 7-0. But the Pirates wasted no time tying the score up early in the second quarter. It wasn’t until :04 left in the first half before Ivey finds Dakota Rushing with a jump ball catch in the endzone to put the Lions back up 13-7.
In the second half, Brady Sherrill for the Lions was able to block a Pirates punt and Colton Cochran scores the special teams touchdown, increasing Haleyville’s lead to 19-7 with 6:24 left in the third quarter. The Lions next score came with 7:07 left in the game when Ivey found Heath Self for another touchdown pass. The Winfield Pirates scores their second touchdown with 1:35 left in the game. After the unsuccessful onside kick, the Lions run out the clock for the 26-14 win.
Next week, the Lions travel north to take on Brooks for an area game. Kickoff is at 7:00pm. Hope to see you there.
